It has taken FIVE MONTHS and a lot of futile paperwork for

my Hogue rubber grips to arrive from USA for my Ruger SP 101 - Well,

it actually took less than two weeks - the rest of the four and a 

half months was simply bureaucratic delay..

I lodged my Application for a restricted item
'electronically' with the Christchurch District Police
Headquarters Firearms Office on .. 11 November 2016

A permit 1704106 was eventually Issued - after FOUR MONTHS
. dated 08 March 2017

I then ordered & paid for this restricted item from USA
which I was informed was landed and intercepted by Customs:
Notice reference 17G0059 dated .. 17 March 2017

I immediately mailed the top copy of the Permit to Import
together with a copy of my Endorsed Firearms Licence
XXXXXXXX as demanded.. and on the morning of 10 APRIL 2017 I
found on my doorstep a "no signature required" package
containing this Restricted Item.

So it has taken FIVE MONTHS and a variety of official
paperwork for me to obtain  ...
A soft rubber after-market grip for my target shooting
revolver. - This 'dangerous' item is then left on my door
step!

My suggestion here is that all of this is totally fruitless,
unnecessary and wasteful - Surely the only items that need
to be 'Restricted' are firearms parts bearing a Serial
Number such as Barrels & Frames / Actions.. as this used to
be the situation here in NZ.

Illegal Possession of Firearms:

The Inquiry Into Issues Relating To The Illegal Possession Of Firearms In New Zealand have published their "recommendations".

I've read their report twice and am now trying to somewhat calm-down.

Their recommendations might be summed-up as:

 A few suggested law changes to make illegal gun use by gang members further illegal - but in different words. - These proposed Law changes will of course do nothing and still be ignored by the law-breakers.

- AND to make a lot of changes to the rules that LAW ABIDING LICENSED SHOOTERS follow - that will cost the law abiding 'FIT AND PROPER' legal gun owners more time and money and paperwork - while doing absolutely NOTHING to reduce violent criminal activity by Gangs.

- did this Parliamentary Committee recommend increased funding and resources for Police to combat gang crime? - NO

- did this Inquiry recommend more Police resources be applied to solving burglaries? - NO

But these Parliamentarians will likely be required to vote for further Corporate business tax reductions - that have already been reduced by around 40% since the 1980s - resulting in restrictions of essential services like Education, Health, and Law Enforcement.

What a SICK joke it all is .. but we mustn't grumble eh - I don't think WWIII has actually started yet despite 59 cruise missiles hitting Syria.

Tapered Cylinder On Ruger SP 101:

- and I saw this image of their test gun.

The Talo Distributor Exclusive is a five shot Wiley Clap Edition with a 2.25 inch barrel and features a special tapered cylinder for easier re-entry into a holster.. Nice detail eh.

But why I'm showing you this is - because my much treasured new  4.2 inch Ruger SP101 six shot 327 Federal Magnum has the same tapered cylinder feature and I had been wondering about that. Maybe the eleven month and two weeks wait for it to arrive was justified?!

- You should be able to just about make-out this same cylinder-taper on mine.. Aww that target is five shots of my home brewed duplex load - shot double-action - neat eh.

Cobber / Commenter 'Colpepper Aramberriberri' put a cylinder full down range (single action !) and reckoned that the trigger action was "a bit gritty and the spring is too strong (when cocking for single action)"

- but then again he worships at the  😍Church of 1911😍 - so has no taste.. a good imagination, - & maybe he's also just got weak fingers.

Mind you ... He is pretty good with a shotgun on clays.

P.S. The 327 Magnum hammer spring is strong because this cartridge uses stronger small rifle primers - in contrast to the soft & wimpy primers used - for example - in the very low pressure .45" ACP rounds.

The Book Of Beretta Pistols:

I've just bought the Kindle version of this Gun Digest book by Massad Ayoob - because it had a chapter about the small 'TOMCAT' pocket .32" ACP auto pistol that I'm interested in.

Published in 2005 it cost me just over $10 to load onto my e-reader - and what great value it is proving to be as I read it.

This guy "Mas" is truly an inspiring writer who really knows his guns & shooting - and he says what he thinks - bad bits as well as the good. (He wasn't that impressed by the wee .32" Tomcat! - but I'm still intrigued and would love the opportunity to get an 'Inox' one).

He might be talking about - say the M92 locking blocks - but he weaves a complete story around the technical details - bringing in other shooters stories and how his young daughter 'Cat' grew to be a competition winner and ...

I am not particularly a Beretta fan - but the factual experience & opinions Massad offers are so interesting that I will eagerly read on for every chapter about even many models I have never heard-of  or considered before. His writings are rich with self-defense, - shooting and law enforcement lore.

If you can't raise enough interest to try this 'Beretta' book - at least have a look at his other offerings such as 'The Truth About Self Protection' and 'Concealed Carry'.

They seem to be professionally presenting and strongly voicing shooters rights in an effort to encourage New Zealand licensed gun enthusiasts to stand-up and make their feelings and voting strength known.

They say:

"The goal of this blog is simple. To keep the shooters of New Zealand up to date on the threats to their right to responsible firearm ownership. Then to provide them with the information and guidance to counter such attacks."

Kiwi Gun Blog seems to have started in February this year - and I hope that they prove to be an ongoing success. I don't know who they are - other than 'Anonymous' of Auckland.

- It is completely coincidental that this - being my 700th post - is concerned with publicizing their birth.

32" Calibers - They're Small, Effective, & Easier To Shoot Well:

I have a few gun books (and guns) .. because I try to find out what I'm doing - and what (mostly?) I'm talking about eh - plus of-course - reading is much more fun than watching the repeats and thirty-three percent advertising content on our TV.

These Three Are Good Under The Covers - I've Checked-out each Several Times.

Sad to say though - most of the older books have a nasty habit of copying each others myths by dismissing the 'Thirty-Twos' as being too small and ineffective to be of any value while lauding the 'forty-five'.. Not so much in the more recent, up-to-date writings.

Four 'Thirty-Twos' .. Ancient To Modern (L to R):

H&R .32" S&W ("Short"). - Colt Model 1903 .32" ACP

Ortgies 7.65x17mm (.32"ACP). - Ruger SP101 327 Federal Magnum

- Wow,  I can hear some of you screaming at me even down here .. "32s are Mouse guns and .32 ACPs are 'Mini-Mouse' Pip-Squeaks".

- I'll come to that argument shortly .. but you'll have to admit that ALL the 'experts' - including members of The Church of The 1911 - concede that thirty-twos are capable of superb accuracy.

.. but -  "That's what I'm talking about ... POWER  - "One Shot Stops"

! ! !

Now I know that you good people will forgive me for referring you to a modern, factual study by Greg Ellifritz from 2011: Link:

I really don't want to annoy anyone but this factual study of shootings from US police records shows this:

 40% one-shot-stops for 32"ACP & 32" S&W ( - with 78% accuracy & 72% head or torso hits)

39% one-shot-stops for the .45" ACP    (- with 85% accuracy & 51% head or torso hits.)

So - please take a deep breath before reading on.. And consider this - the British & Commonwealth .303" SMLE of two World Wars, - and the 'Russian' (universal) AK47 in 7.62x39 are in the same bullet caliber as the .32"s. - If you are with it and already are a 327 Federal Magnum fan looking for a hunting rifle/carbine in 327 for small/medium game - consider converting a SMLE to 327 Magnum by re-chambering it for that straight-wall cartridge.

In the US 'carry gun' context - the facts are that a 'thirty-two' pistol is accurate, - easier to carry & soft to shoot, and as effective as a .45".

- Even my old gun books point-out that the MAGNUMS ..  .357" Magnum, 41" Magnum, and .44" Magnum are generally not suitable for "self-defense" as they are "too much gun" for most people to carry or use.. unless your name is Clint.

But a current model 327 Federal Magnum throws slugs with similar speed and power to a .357 Magnum while being much easier to control - and with more shots - from a smaller revolver's (45,000 psi) high pressure round.

Historically New York Police adopted the .32" revolver way back in 1896 - and the .32" ACP - known as 7.65 mm Browning has been used for over a hundred years by police and military throughout Europe - since it's introduction there by Fabrique National in 1899.

Modern .32" ACP (7.65x17mm Browning)

NZ Police used to have .32"s  - So did NZ Bank Clerks & security guards before they were disarmed in 1975.

- What more can I say?

Raytheon Silent Guardian is a non lethal vehicle mounted directed energy system that was deployed in Afghanistan in 2010 by the US Air force - but recalled (maybe because they thought that there might be adverse publicity from using a "Death Ray").:

The system’s antenna emits a focused beam of millimeter wave energy. The beam travels at the speed of light and penetrates the skin to a depth of 1/64 of an inch, producing an intolerable heating sensation that causes the targeted individuals to instinctively flee or take cover. The sensation ceases immediately when an individual moves out of the beam or the operator steers the beam away. Silent Guardian does not cause injury because of the shallow penetration depth of the millimeter wave.

I always guess that .. when images & video of a NEW WEAPON are released to us through the media - it is because 'they' have in reality moved-on to something bigger & better, even more effective - so they are now happy to release information to the public (including 'The Enemy') of the now replaced & soon to be obsolete earlier weaponry. - Am I just an old cynic?
