Thomas Thorp (Sir) formerly a High Court judge was commissioned in 1996 to conduct a review of firearms control in New Zealand. - This was despite the Arms Act 1983 being extensively amended in 1992.
Sir Thomas Thorp.
The final 281 page report of 30 June 1997 was completed after public hearings were held in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, - six research projects by independent consultants, - visits to Australian states - and 2,884 written submissions were received.
- This report is still 'out-there' and 'before Parliament' and while some of the recommendations therein have already been adopted - many others - including registration and a three year renewable licence have not, - yet.
I recommend that you down-load Greg Newbolds PDF Appraisal of the "Thorp Review" as it is well written in plain language and is only 14 pages. - You might, like me, print it off and place it in your bathroom as reading matter while seated.
Greg Newbold (University of Canterbury) nicely covers the reviews contents and background while adding his own comments and observations.
