Indeed.... firearms above all weapons are the great equaliser. The skill required to use one effectively can be learned by the small, weak and even disabled. The problem with them is that you cannot shoot someone a little bit, and any bullet wound is potentially fatal. That is not necessarily the problem it may appear if one avoids the situations in which it might be reasonable for someone to deploy a firearm against you.

The idea of the people being empowered horrifies them because the path to being able to defend one's person and property effectively against aggression might very easily morph into doing it against government aggression, which is the sine qua non of their position.
It's called freedom...they hate the very idea of a free people, but a people can never be free if they are denied the means to defend their freedom against anyone, including the government, that wishes to take it away.
