NEW POLICE Body Armour Is Great:

There are between 10,000 to 11,000 serving police officers in New Zealand and they are supposed to be actively recruiting and training up to 1,800 further new officers currently.

I truly hope that the training and equipment for our thin blue line is the best available - we need them.

Police has have just publicized their new spending of NZ20.7 Million on body armor - spread over the next four years. They are proud of it.

http://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/new-body-armour-help-keep-police-safe

- These following calculations are speculative to a degree as most statements that I research are very coy about ACTUAL numbers .. however it would be fair to say that roughly half of the new recruits are to replace staffing losses - we might calculate that by the end of this four year roll-out there may have been issued around 12,000 replacement body armor vests.

Now accepting that I'm only a forklift driver storeman (retired) I calculate that to be a cost of NZ$1,725 for each vest. - In USA The Rand Corporation estimated that the cost per officer as being US $111 .. (in 2010) so I'll double that for the exchange rate and double it again for inflation:

https://www.rand.org/news/press/2010/08/31.html

NZ $ 444.   - Then how about we double it again just for luck?.. that makes each vest maybe   NZ $888.      - No .. we're not getting there yet .. perhaps each officer will get an extra bonus body armor set in their color choice on her/his birthday - now we're close to it at $1,776 for each serving officer.

Tactical Solutions - supervising this armor purchase are obviously a quality outfit .. I see that they can supply bolt cutters @ $829 each whereas  Mitre 10  charge fully $79 for a similar item ..

Being that we are British New Zealanders - I also note that Fortress Body Armour of Scotland can do these ballistic-stab-proof armor vests for 140 pounds each .. free shipping worldwide.

Compact Carry Guns And A Question Of Opinion:

- Here you go - maybe this is something to think about:

My question is .. How can any two people, when shown the same item or fact - hold totally opposing opinions of it's value or status?

This can only happen if one (- or maybe both of them) - dismisses & ignores some aspect (fact) of the item or issue that would otherwise stop them holding onto some cherished personal 'core value'.

In order to keep the discussion in-line with the stated flavor of this blog .. let's use a gun as an example: A GLOCK.

Since 1982 this basic design has been adopted worldwide very extensively for use by Military, Law Enforcement, and civilians as their choice for an effective,  dependable, portable firearm.
- However .. after 37 years - there are still those who opine that Glocks are C R A P.

.. Sometimes some folk just WANT to believe that "it" is so.

I've even read again recently, opinion that Glock's use of ceramics encourages terrorism.😍

.. I well recall the Head of the Police Firearms Office, 'Taffy' forcefully telling me that "NO WAY WILL MY POLICE FORCE EVER USE A PLASTIC GUN".
After a whole human generation .. (& five Glock generations 🙂) .. there are still some shooters who will swear that these guns melt in the sun - are invisible to X-Rays - blow-up - are inaccurate - fall apart when dropped - are dangerous because they haven't got an external 'safety' switch - are plastic toy guns - or are an anti-American communist plot.
Glock Gen5. G19X

- All this seldelusion despite the further obvious reality - that without exception - every other firearms manufacturer has introduced their own version of such a high capacity polymer pistol.

There are STILL shooters who insist that the ONLY worthwhile handgun is a '1911 forty-five' or a 'forty-four Magnum' or perhaps 'a 357 Magnum'.  - Of course these chosen preferred handguns do have merit and are functional in their own manner.

e.g.2: British ROYALISTS when cornered - repeatedly avow that even if everything else about the costs of an inherited, privileged, undemocratic monarchy is true - they will claim that people from all over the planet flock to England to see the extended royal family as a major tourist attraction that is worth MILLIONS.

FACT - 50,000 Visitors to Buckingham Palace annually.

VERSAILLES
.. despite the fact that many more tourists, 3 Million per year visit the French Palace of Versailles who's royals were permanently declared obsolete & redundant in 1789.

.. NO FRENCH ROYALS FOR 230 YEARS.

- To hold any strong opinion which is not fact based - they have to ignore the TRUTH.

The deluded will maintain that the facts are wrong and that their beliefs are right - because to accept otherwise might render their cherished core principals in life to be without value.

Here is a link to a factual test comparison from Greg Ellifritz of three modern compact pistols - the S&W Shield, Glock 43X, & Glock 48:

NZ Gun Safety & REGISTRATION:

I've just endured a live broadcast on Radio NZ about "Gun Safety, Registration, & Licensing" on 'Nine to Noon'.

WARNING , WARNING - the bullshit alarms are ringing .. a senior police officer claiming that they recently introduced a new training component for firearms licence applicants?:

WRONG. What they actually did was CANCEL the existing long standing training scheme and certification program and substituted an inferior, hard to access, more expensive iteration that has already needed to be changed. - I have my training certificate from 35 years ago.

Then they wheeled-out a self declared "Gun Safety Advocate" named Kevin Clements who claimed that the Aromoana shootings were caused by MSSAs owned by David Gray.. when actually much of his rampage he used a .22" rim-fire 'rabbit gun' - then this expert stated that there are more than 6,000 illegal MSSAs out there in New Zealand that can be made into machine guns by fitting "BUMP STOCKS" !

Would it be impertinent of me to point out that there are in New Zealand some 240,000 LICENSED TRAINED & EXPERIENCED genuine GUN SAFETY ADVOCATES - the owners - who actually use their firearms on a frequent basis in a lawful and safe manner. - Their fact based opinions carry much more weight than some ignorant inexperienced non-shooting academic.

.. Gun Registration raises it's useless head once again.

Guillotine, Halifax Gibbet, & The Scots Maiden,

Most of us would think of the GUILLOTINE in the context of the French Revolution of 1789 - but this 'engine' had extensive use in many lands both before - and after this period.

One early instance in Europe comes from IRELAND and dates from 1307 when a gentleman named Murcod Ballagh was terminated and earned his place in history through a woodcut illustration from a 1577 publication:
The Irish were 'On-To-It' early.

Germany had a long affection for the guillotine .. recorded from at least 1871 with the final such execution by the fast blade in 8 July 1966 of Horst Fischer, an SS officer at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. This does have a certain ring of justice as there are believed to have been more than 16,500 people guillotined in Germany between 1933 and 1945.

In Scotland - "The Maiden" was introduced in 1564 in the reign of Mary Queen of Scots and was mostly used on gentry & nobles .. canny folk the Scots.
Original Historic Scottish Maiden:

Known as 'The Maiden' because it was "little used" - this Scottish machine is preserved at the Edinburgh Museum of Scotland. The Maiden featuring an iron blade weighted with lead is recorded as executing more than 150 people between 1564-1710.

Sweden adopted the guillotine in 1903 - ordering one from the French Head Executioner. The Swedes had previously depended upon the handheld axe.
Original Swedish 'Berger' Guillotine In Stockholm.

In France in 1789 .. poor old Doctor Joseph-Ignace Guillotine got historically well lumbered by his name sticking to this sliding weighted blade mechanism - whereas factually he opposed capital punishment and sought to make it less barbaric by changing to the swift & sure blade.

- Another Doctor - Antoine Louise actually developed the steel bladed and weighted slider which was last employed in La Belle France in 1977.
The classic design was quiet simple with the weighted blade running in grooves and released from the top by having the suspension rope slipped sideways from it's hook on the weight. Three bolts fixed the blade to the steel block.

In England the use of The Halifax Gibbet - an 'engine' that dropped a lead weighted axe fifteen feet -dates from 1208 and was used to behead convicted minor thieves and above.
http://www.guillotine.dk/Pages/gibbet.html

The French government enthusiastically exported their execution machines to various overseas colonies .. including South Vietnam. - I recall that at the end of WWII, the British forces in Vietnam re-armed the defeated Japanese Forces to control the Vietnamese population until France could reorganize and re-colonize 'Indochina'.

- All this bloody justice is both from early times and very recent and makes a bit of a mockery of our current legal fashion to seek punitive damages for having been upset 😆 by someone saying rude things about ones lifestyle or physical attributes.

Sticks and stones may break my bones       (... & sharp blades may cut me!)
.. But names will never harm me.

Any INNOVATION At Shot Show?:

As noted two blogs back, apart from Kel-Tec's CP33 very high capacity .22" long rifle rim fire pistol - 33 rounds with a 50 round extended magazine forecast.

33 Round 'quad-stacked' Magazines From Kel-Tec:

- and excepting Standard Manufacturing's S333 'Thunderstruck' double barreled .22 WMR revolver, there's little to get excited about ..
Two Barrels, TWO Shots & Two Fingers from Standard Manufacturing:

The ALIEN PISTOL from Laugo Arms seems to be delayed and not mentioned as present at SHOT SHOW.

Designed with it's recoil spring and hammer above the low line barrel - this piece should be an easy shooting center-fire side arm. - BUT it hasn't arrived at your nearest friendly gun shop yet (if ever?)

- Some times good ideas run out of momentum before becoming a commercial success ... (like my silent ammo.for standard handguns eh)

Jail Violence - Robbers In Action:

There's a joker who's professional-work-thinking* I am appreciating currently .. he's a law enforcement officer, corrections officer, instructor, investigator, - a 'Go To' Guy.

His way is don't invite trouble - BUT when subject to any violent attack or ambush .. first reflexive response is a solid palm heel blow to the attackers face. Every time.

This disrupts the unwashed's momentum and attack plan. - Follow through with whatever .. possibly a side kick to the knee then get inside his "guard" and operate in close .. Avoid the blood while handcuffing.

My man quotes:
"The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but NEVER hit softly." Theodore Roosevelt. - Naturalist, Rancher, Police Commissioner & Governor of New York, - 26th President of the USA.

.. While maintaining my strongly held & totally pacifist principles - I wholly concur.

https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/national/wealth-of-new-zealands-richest-men-grows-as-poor-get-poorer/

- so much for brain washing acclaim of these types as 'wealth makers' .. more realistically their financial avarice would better be described as cradle robbery.

These two richest New Zealanders, Graeme Hart and Richard Chandler, are worth $15 Billion and $3.1 Billion respectively.

- Don't you think that when someone such as an administration tries to feed you bullshit .. they deserve to have that ordure thrown back HARD into their faces?

2019 Shot Show - Review from GHG plus Expert Comment ..

I spotted this review of new stuff from this years big Shot Show:

 http://www.gunsholstersandgear.com/shot-show-2019/

Of course there seems to be the usual Heinz 57 Varieties of new improved 1911s that somehow remain unchanged from the fabled & miraculous GI originals .. but there are some innovations noted:

Standard Manufacturing seems to have turned-up with their S333 TWO BARREL - TWO FINGER REVOLVER .. so they may be serious ..
S333 'THUNDERSTRUCK'.

.. and Kel-Tec's CP33 x33 round magazine s/a pistol in .22" L/R Rim-Fire has debuted - suggesting that their earlier patent for a high capacity magazine version in 22" rim fire has been successfully developed from their groundbreaking PMR-30 guns in WMR caliber.

Kel-Tec High Capacity .22" L.R. Rim Fire Is The CP33.

That linked GHG show report is a good one.

Marty K.         -   POST SCRIPT:
Hi Marty

I looked at the SHOT show link on your last (this) post.  What a sad, tired and ugly bunch of crap!  It seems that the modern crop of gun ‘designers’ lack not only innovation and imagination, but also any appreciation of style or classic lines.

The ‘new’ handguns seemed to be reincarnations of the Glock and Colt 1911 pistols with the addition of sharp edges, cumbersome optical sights, and rails for attaching useless equipment, and I would rather not talk about the sawn-off AR15 ‘pistols’.  The rifles were very ‘ho-hum’ and would have to collectively be the ugliest selection I have ever seen.

Mossberg’s ugly short shotguns may have some limited use as ‘room clearers’ but the stock design will enhance recoil and reduce control.  I suppose they will appeal to the ‘Walter Mitty’ set, and never get used apart from the first mag full at the range.  I despair for the future of firearms if this is the best they can come up with!

 Cheers, Rod Woods.

WhooHoo ! - I have to TOTALLY agree with you mate - in fact I'm relieved that somebody else thinks on the same lines as myself.. especially a 'someone' who knows WTF he's talking about.

Cell Time:

Bad Guys, Nutters and Theistic monks all get constrained into cells (small rooms) .. sometimes good guys have to enter and deal with the cell's inmates.
Ruger Mk. IV: Proof Of Evolution v Intelligent Design Complexity Theory.

The cells of our bodies and brains are VERY MUCH smaller - and more importantly - much more complicated:
A Typical Animal Cell - Yes We Are Animals - Looks like a screenshot from an episode of  Game Of Thrones    - a little world all of it's own.

No kidding but I always thought cells were sort of round with a dot in the middle.

If you push your way through the Plasma Membrane and have a poke about inside you'll meet all sorts of clever shit in there wobbling around in the jelly-like Cytoplasm .. including Ribosomes, Cytoskeleton fibres, Endoplasmic reticulum (sorry ..didn't mean to swear), a Golgi apparatus, Lysosomes & Peroxisomes, - Mitochondria and a Nucleus.

Here's a decent explanation:  https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/primer/basics/cell

This is really all too much for a has-been fork-lift driver to absorb - but there are said to be 37.2 TRILLION of these cells already in my body without me absorbing or developing any more eh.

That's 37,200,000,000,000 in the current way of thinking .. but the older BRITISH 'trillion' would have had six times more zeros. - Either way that is quiet a few cells that might choose to start to go wrong sometime.

(- Thinkers among us will have sussed that a modern Trillion is a million times smaller than an old fashioned one). That's deflation for you.

Now I've probably got this wrong - but reading

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multicellular_organism

I get the impression that we humanoids, the pinnacle of intelligent life here (excepting politicians and 'nobility') .. are merely a collection of cooperative viruses .. if you'd like to argue this point you may have to do some more reading eh.

- Here is some more reading that explains the function of the Golgi Apparatus or "Complex" .. if you can understand it - you are in the wrong job:
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golgi_apparatus

- Here is a human cell (  ) - Can't see it? Ah you'll need to magnify it about 7,000 times.

So - If a 'grain' is 1/7000th of a pound - how many 'granules' are there in a grain of 'Trail Boss' or 'Bulls-eye' pistol powder?

'QuakeMaker' 185 grain 9 mm ammunition from Seismic Ammo of Oklahoma is coyly described as sub-sonic ..

New Here? - Who You Are Looking At:

Here's a story for you .. Way back in the 'dark ages' (late 1980s) when I first took-on the New Zealand Factory Agency for Glock Ges. - I arrived home from work around 2 p.m. to find a cardboard box on the street below my mailbox - that when I opened it contained FIVE Glock 17 9 mm auto pistols and some extra magazines.

It had been intercepted, checked and recorded as a legal import by the Auckland Customs Department and released into the ordinary domestic mail system for delivery. -They should have transferred it to their Christchurch Depot for me to collect.

If you can't work out what my point is .. I'll try to clarify ..
I really enjoy guns and shooting.
I really enjoy the company of other police-approved 'fit & proper' licensed shooters.
I feel relaxed on the range surrounded by loaded firearms & solid jokers.
I am seriously a non-aggressive PACIFIST and totally ANTI-NUCLEAR .. but I try to be 'ready'.
I read a lot.
I hate liars, hypocrites and greedy a'holes .. and I strongly dislike people drawing salary but not doing the job.

The Washington Post  says:
In 710 days, President Trump has made 7,645 false or misleading claims.
Check it out here:  https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/trump-claims-database/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.8cf2870f6722

I am not anti-american - I'm pro humanity .. just about all normal Americans I have met are great - the problem is that those at the top are not normal. - The top 1 or 2% of the US establishment and other nations are corrupt greedy power-seeking scheming mentally unbalanced freaks.

PROBLEM: WE tolerate corruption from government & corporates.

I try to post interesting and positive stuff from our beautiful but shaky New Zealand on guns, shooting and related issues - in a positive & entertaining way.

Citizens armed with guns are not the worst problems that the world needs to deal with -Corrupt undemocratic governments with the means to slaughter millions of us are our most serious issue.

GLOCK 19X plus Stuff:

My pussy eats more meat than I do ..

.. it's not a bloody  Siberian Tiger - but a cuddly old 'queen' of around 16 y.o. called 'Lulu' (don't ask). - She's typically female feline in that she won't do anything you want .. just gives an unblinking stare until she's ready .. "Coming in? - Coming in? .. shut the door.
- NOW I'll come in 😺  ... but she has no loyalty at all .. zero. (..much like having a woman around the place but still having to do your own washing).

 - Every time any mate (even the police firearms inspector joker) sits down for a coffee - she's all over them like a Manchester Street working girl with dirty knees,- all rubbing & purring.

- I'm much the same way about new gun tests and motorbike reviews .. totally disloyal. Just about 80% of these shiny new things set me off drooling and checking my wallet or bank account.

.. KTM Duke 390  or  Royal Enfield Himalayan  or Suzuki V-Strom 650 or BMW .....?

The latest is the Glock 19X . Yeah I know that I've only just sold my Gen 3 G17 together with all the magazines and brass .. but that new  19X  is something else.

I read that THE BIG G, - Gaston Glock himself personally supervised this project so it should be good (if not 'perfection').
.. Come on - just look at it - ambi-slide-lock/release, tritium night sights, new 'Marksman' rifling, full sized grip without finger-grooves, but a four inch barrel, new sharper trigger snap, THREE magazines in the box, and that cute snub-nose looking short slide. - It's even got a military style lanyard loop eh.

Plus that interesting milky-dog-turd coloration (Coyote Mission  Brown) .. how could you say no?

 - I was in Christchurch Gun City and got the nice man to unlock the 'glasshouse' for a poke at the restricted weapons - and there it was - why it even comes in a cute turd-color-matched carry box.

It felt good in the hand.

- Am I tempted - am I tempted? ... I said I wanted a new Ruger Mk IV - and what about a 30 round Kel Tec PMR-30 in 22WMR? ... it IS my 75th birthday coming-up eh,

Visualization In Shooting?:

I have on occasion been known to introduce PRACTICE into my scribbling - plus I've tried to explain how "Practice makes perfect" - how it actually works in our brains .. The brainy scientists talk about neural pathways and  myelin .

https://flicense.blogspot.com/2016/10/dry-firing-why-practice-makes-perfect.html

https://flicense.blogspot.com/2016/11/instinct-shooting-brain-washing.html

I've sussed that ACTUAL practice has a physical effect inside our heads - as well as strengthening the muscle groups that are being trained .. but then there is mention of  VISUALIZATION

.. such as when you are faced with an IPSC multi-target, multi position course of fire it is seriously helpful to decide your sequences of draw - fire - movement - fire - reloads before you toe the start line - AND practice run through it in your head a few times - complete with "seeing" in ones 'mind's eye' the shots flying home into the A-Zones.

According to Wikipedia .. the visualization we are talking about here is Motor Imagery:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_imagery  .. and they accept that it works ..

Activation in the motor cortex during motor imagery amounts about 30 % of the level observed
during actual performance; Roth et al., 1996.

My guess is that "motor imagery - visualization" affects the neural pathways in a similar strengthening manner to real practice.

- So it works and we can do it just about anywhere .. which means that when you can't actually practice the actions - visualization will be effective to some degree (30%) - which suggests you need to read the shooting PDF linked to below: (- and the writer - who was the Head instructor for The Federal Air Marshals - is suggesting that practicing your visualizing practice will improve it's effectiveness).

https://thestreetstandards.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/minds-eye-pg-1.pdf

https://thestreetstandards.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/minds-eye-pg-2.pdf

- Actually you do need to read it .. visualizing that you have read it won't work eh ..

Marty K.

Around 1978 - a young man forever known as "Heck" came into our living room at home where my wife, young daughter, son and me - were all reading books/magazines while waiting for dinner to finish cooking .. very astutely he observed "You're all reading - I read a book once at school."

Injury From Recoil:

I don't like recoil. - To be honest I am in fact a bit "girly" about it.

At one time I used an ex NZ Army .308" 'SLR' in Three Gun Competition but changed-over to a less potent Ruger Mini-30 fairly quickly. - SLR's were a "British Commonwealth" version of the FN FAL that used 'BRITISH' screw threads instead of that EU foreign metric stuff .. they are a full power battle rifle but military users certainly found that marksmanship was much easier to teach after they changed-over to the smaller 5.56x45mm NATO caliber.

The SLR /FN FAL recoiled at around 10 ft.per sec with just under 14 foot/pounds of recoil energy .. whereas the current 5.56 NATO guns make only 3.4 ft/pound recoil energy at approx half the 7.62's recoil velocity.

Really BIG rifles like the .577 Nitro Express can yield as much as  80 foot pounds of Recoil energy and are guilty of whip-lashing many a spine & neck.

 - Old shooters never die - they just walk very slowly!

Longtime shooting buddy "Colpepper" owns an impressively shiny S&W .44"Magnum revolver with it's original thin wood-chip stocks. - When he once generously passed it to me with six rounds chambered .. it was returned to his proud hands - cylinder open and with five remaining live rounds.
S&W Model 29 .. Often Used Bargains.

This gun, like most of it's bros, is in pristine 'as new' condition for a reason. - Recoil Energy for such kickers can be as much as 22 foot/pounds with maybe 20 feet per second recoil velocity .. it certainly hurt my hands. - this is not to even consider the .50" S&W Magnum X-Frame Revolver that can have more than 40 foot pounds of felt recoil energy.

It is also right to comment here that nobody I know will train or practice regularly with a gun that HURTS THEM .. rushed training will embed slack habits.

I well recall shooting my .308" SLR in a substantially built bench rest firing position with a low roofed bay all made from concrete blocks .. The percussive gas blast on ones head and face was shocking despite wearing proper hearing protection and safety glasses. But that pressure slap to the head did help take attention away from the iron-shod butt kick to the shoulder.

- No doubt there will be some hairy-backed real machos out there telling me to "man up and get over it" .. but there truly is a reason why pain happens .. It is telling you that you are being injured!

Apart from the unpleasant hammering - you are likely to develop a flinch and a history of missed shots when using something with over 20 foot lb. recoil energy.

Shooting injuries don't only happen to targets filling with bullet holes. Shooters sustain physical injuries at the other end.

Carpal tunnel nerve damage, ligament injury, broken collar-bones, detached retinas in their eyes, optic nerve injury,  - headaches from having your brain rattled? - That may indicate permanent brain damage is happening. .. this is added to the hearing loss and reduced mental acuity resulting from toxic lead poisoning.

- At least think about it lads,

Marty K.

After researching & writing 1,036 blogs I've got something NEW to try .. I've signed-up to Patreon. - In over five years I've not made one cent from this blog.. NOW you can send me a wee support $ - starting from $1. to get all this stuff from New Zealand - over a year that's nearly the price of one Shooting magazine. - Am I worth it?
