LANGENHAN Pistol (F.L. Selbstlader 7.65 mm):

.. Ever heard of the Langenhan pistols? - They're German - from 1914-1918 & made for their military .. and were used after the end of WWI by their police.
Langenhan F L Selbstlader 7.65 mm.

Some 70,000 were made and they have a good reputation ... that shouldn't surprise anyone as they are outwardly just about a straight copy of the Belgian made FN Model 1900. (around 700,000 built).
FN (Browning) Model 1900 - 7.65 mm.

Designed  by Friedrich Langehan  - these Browning copies were well made in the typical Germanic habit.

The feature of these guns that interests me is that while they are blow-back 'thirty-twos' with little recoil - they have four inch barrels (some of the German ones are slightly shorter) and the barrels are mounted as low as you can get in the frame below the recoil spring.

Both "brands" have a weakness in that their slides are held in position by a screw that is reputed to come loose and the actions can disassemble rearwards under acceleration .. shouldn't be an issue for alert shooters like us who keep an eye out for any loose screws eh.

A new pistol The Laugo Arms ALIEN is forecast for 2019 from the Czech Republic using the same barrel-under-spring feature.

The Langenhan manufacturing business dated from 1842 and revolved around bicycles and air weapons - here's a detailed history about their air guns:

- So while there may not be "anything new under the stars" - people keep claiming that there is.

Westminster Murders PART 2 -Truth & Lies:

While there are questions about the actions of the Police Acting Commissioner who locked his car doors and drove off from the knife attack - you might think that this 'HEADLINE' story is intended to distract your attention (by 'cherry picking') from the FACT that the killer was known to police as a possible terrorist .. but had been dropped from surveillance due to "prioritization" .. in other words - not enough staff, money or resources.

Police spokespersons are on record for stating that this person was not known to police.

"According to police, Masood was not the subject of any current investigations and there was “no prior intelligence about his intent to mount a terrorist attack”.
He was, however, known to police and security services, with previous convictions for assaults, including GBH, possession of offensive weapons and public order offences. He had not been convicted for any terrorism offences.
In a speech to the Commons, Theresa May said the attacker had been investigated by MI5 over violent extremism, describing him as a “peripheral” figure. The Prime Minister added: “He was not part of the current intelligence picture.” Isil said that the attacker answered “calls to target citizens of coalition" nations”.

MANURHIN Revolvers:

If you've got an unwanted specimen in .32" caliber - give me a shout 😃..

The French firm Manufacture de Machines du Haut-Rhine (Manurhin) was formed in 1920 to manufacture precision machine-tools - but also had a firearms division making high quality Walther pistols under license and then made revolvers.
Best In The World?
Some bold folk reckon that the Manurhin MR73 revolvers are not only far stronger, more durable and more accurate than American built units ... but that these French precision built wheel guns are a better shooting tool than even German made Korth exemplars. - Manurhin revolvers were lauded as each having as much as twelve hours hand fitting and polishing.

There has to be good reasons why these 357 Magnum police weapons passed 170,000 rounds of full power shots without deterioration.

 - High precision manufacture using top quality ordnance certified alloy steel. -  Both the frames and cylinders are slightly larger than S&W K-Frames - barrels are hammer forged six groove, and the cylinders are milled from forgings and chambers roller burnished after drilling.

2.5 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch, 5.25 inch, 8 inch, length barrels were made .. both with fixed or adjustable sights. (The 8 inch guns were used by French police with bipods for urban sniping.)

Speed and accuracy is helped by a reduced lock time - by the hammer fall arc of only 42 degrees compared to typical S&W 54 degrees and Colts Python 60 degrees.

The French counterterrorist unit of the Gendarmerie Nationale—GIGN (Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale)—had been using S&W revolvers, but these had failed to hold up to the unit’s training regimen of firing 150 rounds of full-power Norma .357 loads daily. Note, by the way, these rounds were specially sealed for use underwater, as GIGN was trained for underwater approaches to a target.

Models in 9x19 mm Parabellum, .32" S&W long and .22" Long Rifle may also be found.

Manurhin had a later, joint venture model with Ruger -  between 1981-1984 - the MR 88 which is an excellent & superior arm - built down to a price.
A Ruger-Manurhin MR88. - Nothing but the best.

Manurhin seems to have disappeared (.. except as an ammunition maker) - but their revolver designs continue since 1998 to be produced by La Chapuis Armes - of Saint Etienne - possibly including both right and left-handed versions of the Ruger-Manurhin MR88 revolvers.

Westminster Murders - Truth & Lies:

It is a sad fact that FACTS can be - and ARE - manipulated by powerful people seeking advantage & profit.
Sir Craig Mackey Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

The Head of London's police has stated at the Inquiry into the Westminster Terror Attack, - that he watched a killer stab & kill an officer - from the safety of his locked limo - then he drove away. March 22nd 2017 in Westminster, London. - Link to story:

There are many possible realities and strongly held opinions about his actions & 'admission' - indeed my thought is that he too may have been mentally conditioned by current Police advise to "Don't resist - escape, hide, - call for police help".

I hope that in such circumstance I would have acted differently ... BUT it is increasingly hard to make sound judgments because every issue is colored and presented through the hands of "spin doctors" - Press Officers, advertising agencies, Marketing Agencies, political advisers, Newspaper editors/owners, private secretaries, Public Relations Offices, - who use distancing language, "cherry picking" and propaganda. - People PAID to lie.

Wikipedia says: ".. public relations and advertising may also rely on altering the presentation of the facts, "spin" often implies the use of disingenuousdeceptive, and highly manipulative tactics."

"..  using deceptive "spin" tactics to manipulate public opinion or deceive the public. Spin approaches used by some political teams include "burying" potentially negative new information by releasing it at the end of the workday on the last day before a long weekend; selectively cherry-picking quotes from previous speeches made by their employer or an opposing politician to give the impression that they advocate a certain position; and purposely leaking misinformation about an opposing politician or candidate that casts them in a negative light."

Often we ordinary folk consider 'impressions' or 'perceptions' as the basis for our opinions -
whereas we need to seek THE FACTS before making any judgment.
In plain English - we are being lied to so often by so many different people
that you might be excused for not noticing anymore.

Is it not time to make the telling of lies for profit a criminal offence?

In UK, - Marcus J Ball (Brexit Justice) is moving towards prosecuting Boris Johnson for his
 lies about 'BREXIT'
"I believe politicians lie all the time. This precedent would not – sadly – stop all lying in politics but it would, I hope, stop some of the more serious ones."

- Good luck with that.

First Ever Recorded Firearm Assassination Was A DUPLEX Load in 1570:

I'm a fan of duplex loads (and 'triplex' - MULTIPLEX in fact). - I find the novelty amusing ... Hand the revolver to a shooting mate and say "Try this 327 Federal Magnum at that clean target" - and watch their face as they fire say three shots and they get SIX holes in the black.

- Very effective in bowling pin matches too with a medium power load.
10 mm Auto duplex round.

However - long before self contained cartridges - folk loaded double charges into muzzle loaders - both deliberately and accidentally..

"James Hamilton was called "of Woodhouslee" and "of Woodhouslee alias Bothwellhaugh" in the record.
He was said to have shot Regent Moray twice in the belly and navel on 23 January 1570, with a gun loaded with two lead balls. - By his flight to France he had taken responsibility for the treason and murder."

In Scotland, 1570 James Hamilton used his uncle's brass matchlock carbine, of 3 feet 5 inches (104 cm) overall length having a hexagonal bore barrel of 2 feet 5 inches (74 cm) length.

The stock was inlaid with a deer feeding and at the butt had the usual covered container for storing bullets. - This is the first recorded use of a firearm to assassinate a "public figure".

The gun used - "The Bothwellhaugh Carbine" is variously described as a CARABINE , a hacquebut, and a 'caliver' - call it what you choose but the shooting was effective - fatally wounding The Earl Of Moray - "The Good Regent"  - the shot also killing a nearby horse.
23 January 1570 LINLITHGOW, Scotland.

"The Earl of Moray, the Good Regent, was slain in Linlithgow by James Hamilton of Bothwell-haugh, who shot the said Regent with a gun out at ane window, and presently thereafter fled out at the back, and leapt on a very good horse, which the Hamiltons had ready waiting for him; and, being followed speedily, after that spur and wand had failed him, he drew forth his dagger, and struck his horse behind; whitk causit the horse to leap a very broad *stank; by whitk means he escaped."  .. From a contemporary report (1570).
* A 'stank' is a pool or a pond.

There is a very detailed Wikipedia page on this historic shooting that is a good read:

FBI HANDGUN Wounding Factors & Effectiveness:

Urey W Patrick - author of this thought provoking 19 page FBI report - deserves a round of applause.

If you haven't already - PLEASE READ IT .. Slowly and carefully.

http://www.activeresponsetraining.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/fbi-hwfe.pdf

- I'm going to read it again at least once more to fully absorb it's content and meaning ...

However, my first thoughts are that either an "exploding projectile"  or one that delivers a destructive high voltage charge internally - or pre-fragmenting bullets such as duplex or triplex loadings might be the way to seriously increase handgun effectiveness as "instant termination" devices.

Thanks are again due to Greg at Active Response Training for posting such high value info in his regular Weekend Knowledge Dump. I look forward always to seeing what he's included this weekend.

 - As Greg writes: "Written after their famous Miami gunfight, this paper quantifies exactly how handgun bullets stop people who are shot.  Even though it was written around 29 years ago, the learning points are still valid today."
(The Miami gunfight was April 11 1986.)

.. There have indeed been innovative improved projectiles designed in recent years - but they have not yet been used often enough to yield real data.

FBI REPORT: Page 11 'THE HUMAN TARGET' ..Quote:

"..the concept of reliable and reproducible immediate incapacitation of the human target by gunshot wounds to the torso is a myth."

OK, - improvements are still pending development.
