RUGER 10/22 quality .22" RIFLE, & HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES.

My Ruger 10/22 is exactly what I want for plinking on the range and bunnie shooting. - with the stainless steel and plated finish it is an easy-care, handy, and good looking bit of kit, but I do find some of the controls like the magazine release and bolt 'hold-open /release' a bit fiddly - and if I've not had it on the range for a while - I usually fail to do what I want to do first time and have to roll it over onto its back to look at what I'm doing. - That's not good - but after a few minutes use it gets easier to operate. - There are plenty of after market triggers & release mechanisms that work more logically-  but they are too pricey to buy just to fix a stupid detail that Ruger should fix.

It uses the well known Ruger 10 round rotary magazine which has never let me down - except for
emptying too quickly when having fun shooting steel or bowling pins etc. I run two of these, one in black polymer and the other is a clear 'see-through' one. - I like them both equally and they both (so far) seem plenty tough enough - although the clear jobbie lets you see bits of grubby powder grease & grime building-up inside. Unsightly but I guess you might flush it clean - but I certainly don't recomend taking these mags apart as they're real tricky to put back into working order (spring tension) if you don't know what you're doing - but it is do-able!

If you own one of the Ruger bolt-action .22" rifles that use the same rotary mags -  you get the choice to buy a bigger 'banana' magazine like Rugers own BX-25 or one of the after-market jobbies (Champion 30 round)
-But unless you've got an 'E' Category MSSA endorsed firearms license it would be unlawful to fit the larger magazine into your 10/22 semi-auto  - but you can happily use the "naughty high capacity" mag all day long, provided you don't get blisters from working the bolt-action.

- In New Zealand if you do have an 'E' Cat endorsement and a Ruger 10/22 - is it lawful to fit the bigger magazine if the rifle isn't registered as a MSSA ?
- Or can your lawyer advise you if  the legal bolt-action 25 or 30 round magazine must be secured in an approved and certified  'E' Cat safe if you intend to use it in a semi-auto any time in the future? - Or, if you keep the big magazine in an approved restricted weapon safe , can you legally store the ordinary 10/22 rifle in an ordinary rifle locker?

I once had a SMLE Lee-Enfield bolt-action converted to 7.62x39mm and adapted as a carbine to accept the "AK47" style 30 round magazines - and took it into the old  Christchurch FireArms Office for a giggle - we all had a laugh - as the shortened barrel and 'banana' mag did rather expose the soppyness of the MSSA Laws. I believe that this conversion was fairly simple to do as the .303" barrel is good for the 7.62x39mm round - just needing to be chambered for the shorter case and the extractor adapted to suite the new rimless cases - adapting the magazine-well to take the 'AK' magazines seemed to be the least satisfactory part of the job. - A useful conversion to do to an old sporterised .303' with little other use - certainly the 'Russian' rounds (- usually Chinese) - are a lot cheaper to buy than .303" cartridges are.

I currently have another Lee-Enfield  (9MM NATO) conversion which is a great treat to shoot - it's a fully silenced rifle that shoots the 9x19mm pistol round using an adapted Walther seven round pistol mag. - It's ever so quiet to shoot when using heavy-weight sub-sonic 147 grain FMJ Flat Points from "AMERICAN EAGLE" (- bought from Gun City - They usually have a decent selection on the shelves.) - when shooting at steel plates - no ear muffs required - all you hear is the clang of the hit. Maybe I'll do a story about this "De Lisle" Commando Carbine one day soon.

After researching & writing 1,036 blogs I've got something NEW to try .. I've signed-up to Patreon. - In over five years I've not made one cent from this .. NOW you can send me a wee support $ - starting from $1. to get all this stuff from New Zealand - over a year that's nearly the price of one Shooting magazine. - Am I worth it?
